Please consider nominating a deserving colleague for the Memorial, Sidney Gorman or Sylvia Jones Scholarships.

Memorial Travel Abroad Scholarship

The Memorial Scholarship honors all our departed colleagues who have had a tremendous impact on our lives, our profession, and the students we touch daily.

CLTA originally established this scholarship to honor Mary DuFort, who served as coordinator of language education in Alameda County. Mrs. DuFort’s contributions to the profession were cut short by her untimely death.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to enable one or more members to travel abroad to improve their competency and skills in language teaching and culture.

Applicants decide on their own study plans, school/program, destination and make their own travel arrangements.

Scholarships consist of grants up to $1,000.00 to defray the cost tuition. Applicates are encourage to apply for the LangAbroD grant to defray transportation costs.

This scholarship is funded through the generous contributions of CLTA members. Click on title for requirements.

Sidney Gorman Endowment Scholarship
(for beginning teachers)

Sidney Gorman’s family established this scholarship to honor Sidney, who served as World Language Teacher in Alameda County. Sidney’s contributions to the profession were cut short by her untimely death. She had a tremendous impact on the professional lives of many of our colleagues, especially those new teachers in need of mentoring.

The scholarship provides financial support to enable new teachers (who have been teaching for fewer than 5 years) to improve their competency and skills in language teaching and culture through participation in CLTA’s annual statewide conference.

This scholarship is funded through the generous contributions of Sidney’s family as well as contributions from Sidney’s friends and colleagues in CLTA. The scholarship amount varies and is determined by the amount of donations.  Click on title for requirements.

Sylvia Jones Summer Seminar Legacy Scholarship
(for mid-career teachers)

Sylvia Jones was a teacher, a supervisor, a CLTA past president and Conference Coordinator, and California World Language Project (CWLP) leader, in addition to her other many remarkable achievements.  Sylvia’s remarkable life is immortalized with this legacy scholarship founded according to her wishes by her husband, Vernon, and her son, Norman.

The Sylvia Jones Memorial Scholarship supports one or more mid-career teachers to attend Summer Seminar each year.

The scholarship provides financial support to teachers who have been teaching languages between 10-20 years.

The number of teachers and the amount that each teacher is awarded each year is dependent on revenue generated by the legacy and by contributions. Click on title for requirements.

All applications for the Sylvia Jones Legacy Scholarship go through the Summer Seminar office. If you are interested in this scholarship, send an email to worldlanguagesummerseminar@gmail.com.
