Los Trenes de España

Teacher Lesson Plan
by Greg Eichler
Washington High School/San Francisco

Language: Spanish
Level: Beginning High
Grade Level: 9-12

Objectives

Comprehend the language and symbols of a Spanish train schedule.
Learn some basic geography of Spain.
Recognize the 24-hour clock.
Navigate a site entirely in Spanish.
Retrieve specific information on the WWW

Materials

    Computer with World-Wide-Web access
    Student worksheet
    Transparencies of RENFE web pages
    Overhead projector

Procedure

1. Teacher asks class to list different means of transportation. After that list has been compiled, teacher writes down his own list of places and asks the students to match which means of transportation are most appropriate for the places s/he has listed, e.g.,

bicicleta - escuela
automóvil - una ciudad cercana
avión - China

2. Teacher proposes what means of transportation a visitor to Spain would use. S/he leads the discussion to the conclusion that trains would be the most comfortable, efficient and economic means for the distances involved.

3. Teacher, having previously accessed the RENFE [Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles Españoles] site [http://www.renfe.es/index.html ] and printed out pictures of high-speed Spanish trains onto transparencies, displays the pictures of sleek, modern trains [e.g., Ave].

2/4

4. Teacher distributes one worksheet per pairs of students. One student is in charge of navigating the WWW and the other in charge of writing. Teacher reads the worksheet instructions and questions aloud with students. After asking if there are questions, teacher write the prime web site address on the board:

http://www.renfe.es/index.html

tells students to log on to the and complete their worksheets.

5. After thirty minutes, teacher collects the worksheets and redistributes them in such a way that each pair "corrects" another pair's worksheet. Each question is gone over again and the correct response announced to the entire class.

Extension
