In this activity we will be visiting web sites to find out where these two places are located and to compare them.
1. a) Have you ever been to Washington?
b) Did you know that there are two Washingtons?
c) Here is a U.S. map, can you tell me which Washington is which?
d) Where is Seattle?
2. Go to web site http://www.indo.com/distance/
In the From box type seattle. In the To box type Washington D.C.
Write down the following information:
a) Distance "as the crow flies" in miles and kilometres.
b) Population of Seattle and Washington D.C.
3. Go to web site http://www.sitesatlas.com/Maps/Maps/WA1.htm
Write down the following information:
a) Which Ocean is Seattle near?
b) Which two states border Washington?
c) Name a nearby National Park...
4. Go to web site http://www.seattleattractions.com/
a) Name two places you would like to visit in Seattle, Washington.
5. Go to web site http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/dc/ and write down the following information:
a) Area of City in sq. miles and sq. kilometres.
b) Name two states bordering Washington D.C.
c) Click on Sightseeing Map and name two places you would like to visit.
6) Can you now answer the questions in number 1)?
7) List here any words that are similar to words in Italian (or your first language):
8) List here words that are not like Italian but that you understand by context:
9) Now that you have gathered this information write a letter to a friend in Italy (or your home country), and pretend that you have visited both places and compare them, giving your preference.
OBJECTIVES:
A) Read geographical information and maps
B) Discover that Washington D.C. and Washington State are two distinct places and learn where they are located and some of what they have to offer a tourist.
MATERIALS:
A) Computer with access to World Wide Web
B) Printout of map of US from http://www.indo.com/distance/ Then enter From Seattle To Washington D.C. Then click on "See these places on the map."
C) Student worksheet
PROCEDURE:
1. Ask students a) if they have ever been to Washington?
b) what they want to know about Washington?
c) Do they know that there are two Washingtons?
d) Give them the US map and see if they can tell you which is which?
e) Do they know where Seattle is?
Do not correct answers, this is just general brainstorming, they will discover if their answers are correct at the end of this activity.
2. Have students look up information on the web.
3. Help students find information looking for cognates.
4. Have students look for meaning in context .
5. Ask students for words that they do not understand.
EXTENSION:
Have the students write a letter to a friend in Italy pretending that they have visited the two Washingtons, comparing them and explaining their preference.
