"Race to the Top" must include world language education Have you heard of "Race to the Top" competitive grants from the U.S. government? According to the U.S. Department of Education, "The Race to the Top funds provide competitive grants to encourage and reward States that are creating the conditions for education innovation and reform; implementing ambitious plans in the four education reform areas described in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA); and achieving significant improvement in student outcomes, including making substantial gains in student achievement, closing achievement gaps, improving high school graduation rates, and ensuring that students are prepared for success in college and careers." CLTA is concerned that the importance of world language study is not being addressed appropriately in grant funding. Please let the Department of Education know of our field's concern that "innovation" and "success in college and careers" must include well-articulated, long sequences of world language study. Send your letters and comments via the following online form: http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs /home.html#submitComment?R=09000064809fdd04. Remember that taking time to officially post comments about legislation is one of the best ways you can contribute to our advocacy efforts. When legislative staff see that comments are coming in from a particular group of voters, they begin to pay more attention to what that group is saying. Besides, your elected "representatives" at all levels cannot represent you if you don't tell them what you stand for! ACTFL Convention Comes to San Diego ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching for Foreign Languages) will have this year's convention in San Diego. This is a great opportunity for California teachers to participate in a national level conference for world language teachers. The past few conventions were held in Orlando, San Antonio, and Nashville. These conventions attract about 6,000 world language educators from all over the nation and abroad. This is a BIG event. Don't miss out. The ACTFL convention probably won't be back to California for 10-15 years. Mark your calendars for ACTFL’s Annual Convention and World Languages Expo Nov. 20-22, 2009, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. Visit ACTFL's web site for additional information and registration. |
